Ghetto Blaster

Boom boxes or Ghetto Blasters were commercially introduced in the late 1970s and was really popular around 1975 to late 1980s and doing this research about the 70's I found this time really interesting and have been inspired with this look and time. It's really made me think about doing a shoot like this for the fashion and for my mail theme I was thinking of doing 70's pop music and how fashion was with the Ghetto Blaster out as it was such a big thing in the day and I could get a really good photo shoot and have a great location in mind.

I found some photographs when searching Ghetto Blaster in google

Some of the photographs are for this link...

The Ghetto Blaster basically a large, portable, radio cassette player and was about 1.5 m wide and 1.0 m high. I really want do do a shoot with all this in mind as I think it would be a great opportunity for me and feel I could get some great photographs out of this.

Work based learning Dark-room poster

I was asked to create and come up with an idea or some sort of notice for the door before you enter the dark room as people are sometimes unaware of people processing film and could end up working in on someone wile the negatives or ilford paper it out and could result in the paper or negatives to be exposed at you don't want that to happen so to prevent this i come up with a poster for the door and this is what i come up with:

This is the picture I taken on my phone and I placed this in to photoshop and made a new canvas.

This is the first one I made and I thought a tight crop was good as it fitted the slide on the door but when I emailed kevin he told me to change the size to a4 but as it doesn't look right as its attached to my blog.

Work based learning screen calibration

On the 09/03 first thing I was asked to calibrate and sync the computers to get better colour tones. The software used was called Spyder3pro and the settings must be at .............................................once you have the software up and running and you have put the correct settings in and the settings are saves you then connect the spyder to the screen by jus simply placing it over the top which has a weight to balance the spyder to the monitor  after this I cleaned all the screens and made sure the lights where turned of and blinds lowered as I was told my Kevin that light and even touching the screen can interfere when the Spyder is calibrating.

This picture above is just an example of how the spyder sits on the screen and you can see how this is calibrating the monitor.

70's fashion clothing

I have started to look at 70's clothing as I really like the 70's music and would love to focus more on the clothing and make arraignments for a photo shoot. I could look at 70's clothing all day as i love the style and colours. I want to do lots of shoots as i really want to get a good mark and try hard with this assignment.

Work based learning lighting

On one wednesday morning I was asked to put lighting away and to check if all the lighting heads worked correctly. If not then I would have to tell kevin, The lights that did work then I was to see if the lamp bulbs worked and if not then to replace them.

I was given a pack of bulbs and each bulb cost £10 pound and I was shocked by the price of them. After going through all the lighting the uni had only one lighting didn't work so that was past on to kev and then he sends it of to get repaired.

This picture above was taken by my iphone and its of the packaging of the bulbs used for the bowens lighting. What I was doing is using a power cable I made sure the Bowens head light was turned of and then once the power was connected then I would turn the lighting head on and turn the switch to lamp and if it turned on then it was working and I wouldn't  need to replace it with a new bulb.

This picture above shows the packet of bulbs kev provided me and also a diagram showing the bowens lighting and how to set and mount the bulbs. This diagram is good for when looking for information on how to use the lighting and for how to set the lighting up ether in studio or on location.

This is one of the Bowens 500w head lights, this one doesn't have a lamp bulb attached as this is the one that didn't work. This head light can only be used as a flash but if needed to have constant light then it wouldn't be of any use.

This is not the best photograph but it shows the bulb working and what i mean by constant light.
I didnt need to put a new bulb in this one as it was all working in good order but most head lights on the day needed new bulbs.

This picture above shows how i have put the lighting heads in order and it goes from 500w to 450w and then to 150w.. all the heads are now working and have brand new lamp bulbs.

Helmut newton

Helmut newton

Born in Berlin, Germany and has been interested in photographs since the age of 12 when he purchased his first camera and worked with a photographer called Elsie Neulander Simon. In 1930 Helmut newton become a  reporter for the Straits Times and worked as a portrait photographer.

We had a discussion in uni over Helmut newton and the question was asked weather Helmut newton's photography is porn and personally I feel it's not porn and it is purely the human form and its how people see his work in terms of beauty and the human condition. Maybe Helmut newton loves the women's natural form and shape and because of this then thats why he likes photographing this.

I chosen this image as it shows what I am saying above. This photograph is not in anyway pornographic I don't think and I feel it's basically photographing nude women in a studio.

This photograph is a photograph I have just found and I think it's a great image as it has depth of field and has a perfect women's body with a women holding a polaroid camera and film. I think Another good reason for why this photograph is great is because of the orange background and how it stands out.

Fashion shoot 4

This is another shoot I done for my fashion assignment. I got permission to photograph on farmers property. This shoot was planed about 2 weeks before hand. When in the stables the houses know or sort of detect that I felt incompatible when being in the same room as them. I was seprized that the horses wasn't shocked when the flash went of when using the lighting. I also had to think about the sink lead because I didn't want to be photographing the model and two horses and then another horse walks in to the lead so I had to have my assistant ready to move the sink lead when a horse walks past. I new It was risky as the horses had never been handled. At times the horses would kick out and some times run round the room that we were in and as they weigh a tun it was very risky and dangerous. I know it was very unsafe to use the horses as a prop if you like but I wanted to do something different, exciting and very 70's and for this assignment I thought it would be great. The Farm keeper put down new hay, groomed and cleaned the houses for when we arrived and as the farmer was very busy anyway so to do all this for me I feel that very appreciative. I did find at times hard to work with a model, assistant and the keeper.. Sometimes I had to get the horses in the right place to get in the shot and feel the organisation was very good and as we worked well together I achieved great shots.

I would like to thank:

This shot was taken on my nikon d700 with a 20mm lens. I used one flash head light with a umbrella to soften the light and a reflector.

I taken this shot on propose to create flair and to try and capture a degree of fashion and to create a dreamy affect. The two photographs above was taken in to Lightroom and slightly edited but not much as this photograph was perfectly exposed. I love this photograph more as the model is not facing towards the camera but i feel that it gives this photograph caricature and mystery.

Gregory Crewdson

Gregory Crewdson is an American photographer and was born in park slope and was at John Dewey high school. Gregory Crewdson's dad was a Psychoanalysts who worked in the basement of his house and I think Crewdson had thoughts about his past and in one of his photographs you can see how his thoughts went in to this photograph.

This is a sort of image that I feel was something of Gregory Crewdsons memory. I think his work is just fantastic as his locations as so vast and the using of light is just unbelievable. In most of my shoots I really do have images and influences on my mind and Gregory Crewdson in my eyes is just a fantastic photographer. When researching Gregory Crewdson I come across a short movie of him working and he says that he doesn't see him self as a photographer but a filmographer as he is so based around the lighting and casting rather than the photographer.

This is another one of his work and I just love the mystery, strangeness a beauty of it as everything is just so staged and the set or location is just so vast I just don't know how its done in terms of lighting, colour and mist.

Another great sample of the light and how Gregory Crewdson tries to get a mood and awkwardness to his photographs.

Not only is this photographer someone i look up to and admire but he is also someone with great talent and goes out of his way to get some of the greatest photographs in the world. As this man and another photographer over the past 2 years has changed my way of thinking and ways of photographic ability i have moved on and become more critical of my work and want to better my self all the time. i feel doing this and pushing my self will make me a better person and a better photographer not only in years to come but in terms of making a name for my self in times to come.

fashion shoot

This is a shoot I done in moss side. I drive past this location everyday on my way to university and when I come home. I kept noticing this location and thinking that it would be a great place to use as a location. I boult up the courage to go and see the owner to this location and to ask him if I could go on his property and use it as a location for my fashion assignment. The owner said yes and told his son who worked with him to take me to the location so I can get a better look at the area and the car. I fell in love with this location but was unsure on were and how the lighting would work and be placed. The owners son Kieran was interested in why I wanted to photograph this car and couldn't understand why something that he called scrap I call a great photographic location. I told Kieran I am after abandoned buildings and places for this fashion assignment and he said he new lots of places and he could show me but I would need to keep up with him as he drives really fast. I got in my car and followed him, I found it really difficult to keep up with him as he said he new the roads like the back of his hands. Kieran shown me some locations that i never new existed and I was shocked as I found out there was a prison near by.

This location when organising the model and started to get in the flow of directing and working with my model I started to notice that my photography was getting better and as my assistant was helping me then the shoot just went from good to great!

The model I had is names Sain, She was such a great model as it was her 1st time and she was great in terms of communicating and keeping in contact. Sain was freezing at this shoot as it was a cold and windy  day. Sain lives in Liverpool and I we agreed to meet at Southport station for 11am. I didn't realise she was driving and when she arrived I had to think about where she was going to park her car. In the end Sain followed me to my girlfriends house were she could leave her car and then we went to the location in my car.

I had George as my assistant and he was brilliant to work with as he helped me carry the lighting and help me set everything up.

This was all done on my Nikon d700 with a Nikkor 20mm standard lens and we used one light with a umberella to soften the light. George placed the light where ever I asked him. Sometimes we placed the light in the car, on top of the car and we even tried lift it high to get a sort of low key shot from a light souse from above .

This photograph above was taken to see if the flash was on and it shows the model and my assistant for the day who at the time was George.

clothes i bought for my fashion

I bought clothes from a charity shop in Ainsdale I spent £60 pounds in this shop  as I got about 5 different outfits. The volunteers loved me as I spent so much in the shop and they said they don't make this much in a week. I was looking for 60's/ 70's clothing and I just loved this shop as it had everything really. When going in to this shop I spoke to the lady and she was really helpful and really wanted to understand what it was I was doing and the reason for why I wanted to buy dresses. I couldn't find a wardrobe designer and am still struggling to collaborate with one.

80's Birthday Party

I got the opportunity to photograph a seprize 80th birthday party and I couldn't say no as it was was paid work and it was a photographic opportunity for my work based learning. I had a great time and the family I was photographing where really lovely. After a good 6 hours of hard photographing and organising I thought I would enjoy my self and have a couple of drinks but then that turned in to more drinks and ended up walking out the pub at 6am the next day but I had a ball and given lots of business cards out. During the night when I was drinking I was talking to a gentleman and he said as soon as I walked in to the pub I looked really professional and I new what i was doing.

Here are photographs of the party and are the chosen edited final photographs.
